Self Injection Instructions
Read your prescription instructions carefully to confirm the correct injection dosage. The amount may be listed in milliliters (mL), units, or both, so double-check for accuracy.
How do I properly measure dosage on a syringe?
Injection Site Guide
Upper Arm
Stand with hand on hip.
Use the fleshy area halfway between the shoulder and elbow.
Gently pinch 1–2 inches of skin.
Abdomen
Use the area below the waist and above the hip bones.
Avoid the 2-inch area around the belly button.
Pinch 1–2 inches of skin.
Thigh
Use the middle of the thigh, between the knee and hip.
Focus on the front-to-side area of the thigh.
Pinch 1–2 inches of skin.
To avoid reducing the effectiveness of your medication, change injection sites regularly. Injecting in the same spot repeatedly can cause scar tissue to build up, which may interfere with how well the medication works.
How To Injection Medication
Follow these steps to safely and confidently give yourself a subcutaneous injection:
Wash Your Hands: Use soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
Clean the Injection Site: Open an alcohol wipe and clean the area. Let it dry completely.
Prepare the Syringe: Remove the needle cover by pulling it straight off.
Choose the Angle:
45 degrees: Hold the syringe like a pen with the needle's bevel facing up.
90 degrees: Hold it straight up and down like writing with a pen.
Insert the Needle: Pinch the skin with your non-dominant hand and use your dominant hand to quickly insert the needle.
Inject the Medication: Push the plunger slowly until the syringe is empty.
Remove the Needle: Pull it out at the same angle you inserted it.
Dispose Safely: Place the used needle and syringe in the biohazard bag provided.
Take your time and read through the steps before starting. It’s okay to revisit instructions as you go!
